The Tissue Level of Organization

Purpose:  The purpose of this lab investigation is to review examples of the following type tissues:

Epithelial Tissue  (simple squamous, cuboidal, and columnar)
Connective Tissue (dense regular, cartilage, bone, fat, blood)
Muscle Tissue (skeletal, cardiac, smooth)
Nervous Tissue (neuron)

Materials and Methods:  Compound microscopes, lens paper, and selected microscope slides are required for this investigation.  Before lab please review animal tissues at an internet site.  Two  excellent sites for tissue examination are:

JacDoc HistoWeb

UDHistology

Experiment:  Examine slides/micrographs of simple squamous epithelium, simple cuboidal epithelium, simple columnar epithelium, hyaline cartilage, bone, dense fibrous connective tissue, adipose, blood, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and nervous tissue.

Conclusion:

Define a tissue.

What is a connective tissue?

What are intercalated disks?

What are three parts of a neuron?

What is an osteon?

Describe hyaline cartilage tissue.

Name two cells observed on the blood slide.

What are collagen fibers?

What are fibrocytes?  ... osteocytes?.... adipocytes?.... chondrocytes?
