Osmosis Experiment

Purpose:  The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the principle of osmosis, the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane.

Materials and Methods:  This lab investigation requires, a thistle tube, dialysis membrane, 250 ml beaker, karo syrup, rubber bands, and ruler.

Close off the stem of the thistle tube with your finger and then fill the bulb of the tube with karo syrup.  Use rubber bands to secure a wet dialysis membrane over bulb.

Experiment:  Lower the thistle tube bulb in a beaker of water.  Water should diffuse from the beaker into the karo syrup.  Measure the rise of the diluted karo up the stem by taking measurements in mm every 10 minutes for 30 minutes.

Conclusion:

Why did the sugar in the karo syrup not diffuse into the beaker of water?

What is the semipermeable membrane in this experiment?
