Mitosis

Purpose:  The purpose of this lab investigation is to examine the mitotic events observed during cell reproduction.  Mitosis refers to the division of the nucleus and includes the stages of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.  Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm.

Materials and Methods:  The student will examine an audiovisual which reviews the events of mitosis.

Experiment:

Interphase: G1, S, G2

Conclusion:

What happens to the chromosomes during interphase? 

What are spindle fibers?

When do chromosomes coil up?  uncoil?

What are chromatids?  centromere?

When do chromosomes align on the equator?
