INTRODUCTION TO FILM

The materials on this site will give you a full overview of the course policies and assignments.  If you are trying to decide if the course is a good choice for you, read the detailed Course Guide. [If you can't bear to read all the way through the guide, then this may  not  be the course for you!  Your successful learning in the course depends chiefly on your reading skills, your discipline and persistence, and your writing skills.]

If you have questions, please call me (901-333-4274) or send me an e-mail (jfriedlander@southwest.tn.edu).

A detailed course schedule will be available  for registered students on our My.Southwest site at the start of the term.  [Instructions for reaching that site are printed below.] The schedule will include  two discussion meetings  and two exams set for Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. on the Macon campus.

Welcome to Introduction to Film! This page provides links to most of the documents (other than the texts, the schedules, and the examinations) that you will need to understand and complete the course successfully. At the beginning of the term, the documents will be available as Word files downloadable through students' My.Southwest accounts (as described below).

The Course Overview provides a quick description that will help you decide if you are interested in the course. The Course Guide describes the course in very full detail, and is likely to answer any question that may occur to you. The Course Schedule, (available through My.Southwest) is a detailed description of specific assignments, due dates, and dates for meetings and examinations.  A broadcast schedule  identifies the dates and times for the video programs.  Reaction Paper Instructions and Analytical Review Instructions describe the two main papers, and they are supplemented by a document describing some conventions for Writing about Films. You can help yourself prepare for the examinations by using the detailed Study Questions, and a Grade Record Sheet will remind you of grading policies and help you keep track of your standing in the course.

If you have already registered for the course, be sure to print out and complete the Student Questionnaire, which you can send me through regular mail, cut and paste into an e-mail, or drop off at my office, Whitehead 25 on our Macon campus. If you prefer to use regular mail, you can send materials to me at      John Friedlander

Because you will receive any returned papers or course information through regular mail, it is important you provide an accurate, current mailing address. Current e-mail addresses and phone numbers help me contact students if any problems arise. Be sure that you read the "Course Guide" thoroughly, and review the "Course Schedule" as soon as it is available. Assignments start at the very beginning of the term, and meeting deadlines for assignments can really help your course grade.

You may use this website as your primary source for information, or you may print out the documents separately to have hard copies to work from.
